Abstract

Exercise for Cancer Prevention

Routine physical activity is associated with reductions in the incidence of specific cancers, in particular, colon and breast cancer. Physically active men and women can expect a relative risk reduction of colon and breast cancer respectively of approximately 30% compared to their inactive counterparts. Moreover, in cancer patients (breast and colon), regular physical activity is associated with a decrease recurrence of cancer and risk of death from cancer.

Nearly 50% of adult Canadians are physically inactive, and physical inactivity is a major modifiable risk factor for not only cancers of the breast and colon but also diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, obesity, depression and many chronic diseases. In this presentation, Dr. Amani Golshani, an expert in health promotion and disease prevention through exercise and nutrition, will present the data on the beneficial effects of physical activity for cancer prevention and show how participants can incorporate regular physical activity in their busy lives.
