A GLIMPSE
AT IRANIAN ARCHITECTURE IN THE UNIQUE SETTING OF THE NATIONAL
ARCHIVES
Ottawa.-The Canadian
Society of Iranian Engineers and Architects (CSIEA) is pleased
to announce a very special event which will be held on
Saturday, March 18th, at the National Archives in
Ottawa.
The event, primarily a lecture by
distinguished Professor Marjan Ghannad on the extraordinary
features of one of Iran’s major architectural landmarks, the
famed North Dome of the Jami Mosque in Isfahan, will also be
honoured by the attendance of a keynote speaker in the person
of Dr. Marco Frascari, Director of the School of Architecture
of Carleton University, who will make some introductory
remarks on the influence of eastern architecture.
These scholarly papers will touch upon the
importance of the mosque as a place of worship and on how
these buildings have evolved over the centuries, namely under
the influence of Sassanid architecture, of which the Seljuk
Masjid-i-Jami in Isfahan is a prime example. Architects, art
lovers and anyone who might have an interest in Iranian or
Islamic culture have an opportunity to enjoy this enriching
experience and become familiar with the elaborate design of
this magnificent building, which has often been compared with
India’s Taj Mahal. Professor Ghannad will gladly share her
passion for Iranian architecture, as an extension to such
questions as how the traditional architecture enriched with
philosophy and withstanding the test of time can provide a
vehicle into the realm of the modern world...
To further enliven the event, there will be
an Iranian musical performance. A reception will follow where
guests will have an opportunity to enjoy the paintings and
sculptures by two local artists (Miwok and Lotte Born) who
form a tandem they like to call Artmosphere. The exhibition is
entitled « Wings » and features certain Persian miniature
inspired works, among others. Persian pastries will be served
during the reception, which will be accompanied by a
prestigious musical bonus, a solo Jazz performance by local
celebrity Garrett Leaver, on Glen Gould’s very own piano!
All in all, a great way of spending a
Saturday afternoon!
A final reminder of WHERE and WHEN: The
Auditorium, Library & Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street,
Ottawa, on Saturday, March 18, 2006, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30
p.m.
Tickets will be sold at the entrance at the
price of $ 20 (half price for, students and senior citizens).
Marjan Ghannad came to Canada in 1993.
She earned her B. Arch and M. Arch degrees at Carleton
University. Since her graduation, she has worked for local
architecture firms in Ottawa and taught the Design Studio
course as a Sessional Instructor at Carleton University. Her
projects have been exhibited in several venues and occasions,
such as the Azrieli Pavilion Opening Gallery exhibition, The
Lieutenant-Governor Queen’s Park Gallery in Toronto, the
Travelling Exhibition of Ten Architecture Schools in Canada
and The Ottawa City Hall Exhibition Building at 111 Sussex.
