World Trade Center and Protection of
Buildings against Terrorist Attacks
During
this presentation, Professor Astaneh will discuss the structural
aspects of the 110-story World Trade Center towers and the
terrorist attacks on them which resulted in tragic collapse of
both towers on September 11, 2001 and loss of lives of more than
2800 people. Possible causes of the collapse and lessons learned
from this tragedy as well as measures taken to protect buildings
against terrorist attacks will be discussed.
Bam (2003), Kojour (2004) and Zarand
(2005) Earthquakes in Iran and Reconstruction Efforts
Since
devastating Bam earthquake of December 26, 2003, two more large
earthquakes have occurred in Iran causing hundreds of more
casualties and thousands of buildings demolished. This
presentation will provide a summary of what happened during
these recent earthquakes and then focus on what has been done to
reconstruct Bam and other devastated areas. The reconstruction
of Bam and other earthquake damaged areas in Iran is the subject
of one of Professor Astaneh’s current research projects. The
presentation will end with a short summary of damage caused by
another natural hazard: heavy snow, in Rasht, Iran about a month
ago.
